All ports in each port channel however, are expected to have the same operational speed. It is possible to base the load-balance policy or dedicated frame distribution on a MAC address or an IP address or a port number.

All the policies can be instantly activated once the command for 'set port channel all distribution' is issued. The special session keyword that needs to be implemented when deploying the port channel load balance technology is supported on the Supervisor Engines, within the system. The keyword allows the user to specify the frame distribution method, with the help of the IP address, VLAN and Layer 4 traffic.

All these routed IP traffic pick a port based on the specified and identified source and destination IP address. The 'packets' between the two IP hosts always use the same port in the channel and the dedicated traffic between any other pair of hosts are allowed to access a different port within the channel.
